Geographic Locations

The corporation operates five sugar estates and eight factories, four in Demerara on both banks of the Demerara River in the area surrounding Georgetown and four in the east of the country on the banks of the Berbice and Corentyne Rivers. The geographic locations are better depicted in the map of estate locations.

These estates are situated on the narrow fertile coastal strip between the Atlantic Ocean and the rain forest and savannah of the interior. This area is low lying and is protected from the ocean by a sea wall. Drainage is by a complex system of waterways and sluices and is essential to ensure effective cultivation. Guyana is unique in having most of its sugarcane transported on waterways rather than by road or rail. Sugar arriving by road or coaster from the factories is exported from the Demerara Sugar Terminal in Georgetown. GuySuCo's operation also includes the Head Office, located in Ogle. The Head Office supervises auxiliary departments via the:
