GuySuCo’s Modernisation Project at Skeldon in Berbice is to be the lifeline of the sugar industry in the future. The Project involves the establishment of a modern factory, expanded cane cultivations, the establishment of a refinery and facilitates the co-generation of electricity for the national grid.
The Skeldon Project will be a major contributor to:
- reducing the cost of production
- improving sugar quality
- increasing production (in excess of 450 000 tonnes)
- enhancing sucrose recovery
- reducing operational costs
- improving operational efficiencies
- attracting carbon credits

Advanced technology…
The new factory at Skeldon will be the most modern factory in the Caribbean. The use of diffusion technology in place of conventional milling is a novelty for Guyana. Requiring reduced power, diffusion technology is particularly suited to co-generation.
Modern process equipment…
The use of continuous process equipment in place of traditional batch equipment will improve operating efficiencies and reduce energy consumption. The entire process from cane receiving to sugar dispatch will be highly automated and will be controlled by a central control system.
Environmentally Friendly….
The new factory will use bagasse as fuel. This represents a truly renewable energy source because the fuel “re-grows” each year. The generation of electricity from a renewable source (sugarcane) will benefit everyone.
Exciting technical Challenge…
The modern, state-of-art factory is a sharp contrast to existing factories and will be an exciting technical challenge for operating staff. It will lead to further upgrading and expansion of internal training facilities and future generations of engineers and technologists will benefit from the challenges and experience of a modern establishment.
Future Viability…
In a highly competitive, market-oriented environment, the Skeldon Sugar Modernisation Project will place GuySuCo on a firmer footing to withstand challenges.
