General InformationThe Guyana Sugar Corporation employs approximately eighteen thousand persons, and continually strives for excellence through the empowerment of its employees. Persons with the requisite qualifications and competencies can pursue careers in a variety of subject areas, including Agriculture, Engineering, Finance, Information Technology, and Human Resource Management. To enter the organisation as a Management Trainee or at a senior staff level, a Bachelor’s degree or other Professional/Technical qualification is required. To join in clerical and related positions, a minimum of five passes at the CXC O’Levels is normally required. Cadetship Program As part of its efforts to ensure that staff are well trained for the positions they occupy, and in order to provide them with the skills necessary to assume higher positions within the organisation, the Corporation offers training courses to staff, and administers a Cadetship programme and Assistance to Study schemes. In certain circumstances, the Cadetship scheme is made open to the general public, so that bright young Guyanese could be considered for sponsorship to pursue studies at institutions of higher learning in Guyana and overseas. Salaries and BenefitsAiming to be the company of choice and the employer of preference, GuySuCo offers a competitive remuneration package to its employees. Salaries and benefits for managerial and executive level staff are reviewed periodically to ensure that GuySuCo remains a competitive employer. In addition to a basic Salary, executive level staff enjoy a Duty Allowance, Housing Allowance, Car Allowance and Leave Passage Assistance. Wages, salaries and benefits for the Corporation’s unionised categories are fixed by agreement between GuySuCo and the two major unions the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) and the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE). GuySuCo provides primary health care to all employees, and permanent monthly-paid employees are placed on a compulsory contributory medical scheme which provides coverage for secondary health care. There are also contributory and non-contributory pension schemes for different categories of employees. All staff enjoy Weekly and Annual Production Incentives, when the industry achieves and exceeds the production targets set for a given period.
